Summer Hair Cut

Today, as I hoisted Sofia up on my bathroom counter to try to do something feminine and anti-dishevelled looking to her hair for her Spring Program at school, I realized that a much better idea, and probably long overdue, would be to just cut it. I got the scissors and started wetting it down, then I realized, oh, I should probably take a picture of her hair before I chop it off. She has only been growing it since she was in the womb with very minor trims here and there. Finally, I got a couple of snapshots just for the record and then with scissor in hand realized, well if I'm going to cut her hair, I should cut enough off so we can donate it to Locks of Love. So then, I had to run over to the computer to find out how much I needed. All this, just trying to get ready to go this morning before gymnastics. OK, so at last, I decided to just take her to Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids after gymnastics. So that's what we did.

I cleared all this with Sofia of course, when I asked her if she wanted to cut her hair, she was all for it. She asked me, "like Autumn's hair?". I said, "shorter". --"OK". I think she would have gladly taken it upon herself to do it too if I was less vigilant. When we got to the salon, she eagerly picked out the red motorcycle chair to sit in and "Cars" to watch on the TV. She didn't hesitate or think twice about the plan at all. Luckily we got a man-boy hair stylist. (Last time we were there the girl that cut Marcelo's hair seemed to have gotten quite nervous when I told her to trim his hair and just don't make him look like a missionary. She then proceeded to get my approval as she was about to cut each strand of hair). Anyway, here she is with her A-line bob cut or whatever it is. It's much shorter in the back but I couldn't get her to stop bouncing off the walls after her Spring Program in order to get a better picture of it.

When I collected her cut off pony tail and told her we would be mailing it off and that it would be used to make a wig for a child that doesn't have hair, she wasn't really moved. Later, she came up to me and wanted to see pictures of the kids with wigs. We looked at each one and then she asked to see more kids with their new hair. I guess the photos worked better at showing her what it was all about and she was quite happy with the plan. She put her pony tail in the envelope as she declared, "my hair is cute". And although I couldn't be more pleased with the smoothness of this transaction, I hope one day she does show some kind of organic attachment to something.
